Q - Can you show me with a map on how to get to Calypso's Private dock from important cities/points of interest in Costa Rica?
Yes, we have exactly what you are looking for! Click here and you will be directed to our driving maps section.

Q - What time does the Catamaran depart from the dock?
Unless there is a problem that makes the buses arrive late to our base in Puntarenas
the Catamaran will depart at 9:00 a.m. and return at approximately 5 p.m.

Q - What time is breakfast served in Puntarenas?
We normally start breakfast service at 8:30 am.

Q - How far in advance can I make require a reservation?
You can book your tour up to 1 year in advance or one day ahead if space is available. We recommend a week ahead to confirm space and set up payment.

Q - Can I pay with my Credit Card?
Yes, we take all major Credit Cards (Visa, MasterCard and American Express)

Q - Can I pay cash when I arrive?
Yes but we need a Credit Card to hold your reservation.

Q - Do you offer group discounts?
Yes. The discount depends of the size of the group. Please contact us for specific prices.

Q - What if I have to cancel my reservation?
We have someone to assist you 24/7/365. Just call 2256-2727 (from Costa Rica). If you call 24 hours prior to your tour - you will receive a FULL REFUND ( for 5 people or less). If less than 24 hours - NO refund unless there was an emergency (you will need to provide documentation).

Q - What if I do not show up?
There are no refunds except in the case of an emergency (you will need to provide documentation for a Full or Partial Refund).

Q - What if the bus doesn't show up at my hotel?
We have someone to assist you 24/7/365. Just call 2256-2727.

Q - Do you offer bus transportation to dock?
Yes. We offer bus transportation from many areas of Costa Rica to Calypso Cruise's private dock in Puntarenas.

Q - Where does the bus pick up from?
We pick up at most major San José Hotels en route , Hermosa/Jacó Area (all hotels and condos), Manuel Antonio and Monteverde (4 person minimum).

Q - Is this tour safe tour for my kids?
Yes. We have guests from 3 months to 90 year old. Safe bus, safe catamaran ride and safe island destination.

Q - Is there a bathroom on the bus?
Usually. It depends on the size of the group. For a small group we may use a small bus with no bathroom. All our larger buses have bathrooms.

Q - Is there food on the bus?
You will have a full typical Costa Rican breakfast at El Shrimp Shack/Casa Calypso in Puntarenas but there is no food on the bus.

Q - Do you provide life jackets for all passengers?
Yes. We have 125 life jackets onboard and 6 lifeboats (20 passengers to each lifeboat).

Q - What kind of insurance do you have?
We have 3 different insurance policies for Calypso Cruise passengers. Buses have their own insurance. Calypso Cruise's Catamaran, Manta Raya, has insurance for all passengers. Once on Tortuga Island for the included Calypso activities - Snorkeling Tour and Banana Boat Rides)

Q - What do I need to bring?
Casual comfortable clothes, any suitable swimwear (bathing suit or shorts), sun block or suntan lotion, your camera, sun glasses, hat or cap (tight fitting so it won't blow off), light weight long sleeved shirt, rubber sandals, tennis or boat shoes (high heels or hard sole shoes are not permitted), towels. Extra Cash for: Alcoholic beverages, optional tours, souvenirs, and tips.

Q - Can I bring my own alcoholic beverages?
No. We have a full bar onboard Manta Raya and also on Tortuga Island.

Q - Can we buy snacks and other food onboard?
Snacks and ice cream are available for purchase in EL Shrimp Shack located at Calypso Cruise's private dock before and after your tour. We do not have snacks or other food for sale on the Manta Raya but fresh fruits are complimentary as is fruit juice, coffee and soft drinks. An extensive and delicious lunch will be provided on Tortuga Island.

Q - Is there a bathroom on the boat?
Yes. We have 2 bathrooms onboard.

Q - Do you play music or have live entertainment?
Yes. We play a variety of music onboard the Manta Raya. We have live marimba music at Tortuga Island.

Q - How long do we stay at Tortuga Island?
You will have 5 hours to enjoy your visit to Tortuga Island.

Q - What can we do on Tortuga Island?
We have 2 INCLUDED activities for all passengers - a Snorkeling Tour and a Banana Boat Ride (a $25 value) for FREE.
We also serve a delicious, freshly prepared gourmet lunch. There is time for swimming and to enjoy the calm turquoise waters and beautiful white sand beach.

Q - Do you offer vegetarian or kosher meals? What if I have a special diet?
Yes. When making your reservation, please indicate your preferred meal and we will alert our kitchen staff to prepare a special lunch for you.

Q - Will we see any turtles, monkeys, dolphins or other wildlife?
Depending on the season, it is possible to see dolphins, whales, sea turtles and a large variety of sea birds.

Q - What happens if it rains?
If there is a bad storm, we cancel the trip and refund or re-schedule the group. Luckily, even in the rainy season it almost never rains until the afternoon and we are already on our way back to port.

Q - How much stuff can I bring on the boat?
Within reason, as much as you like. Equipment needed for your Snorkeling Tour or Banana Boat Ride will be provided.

Q - Is the island safe? Are there and snakes or spiders?
Yes. Tortuga Island is safe but you will still be in a nature reserve. There are spiders but it is extremely rare to see snakes. Just use your common sense when exploring.

Q - How fast does the boat go?
Our Catamaran, Manta Raya has a top speed of 18 knots but we normally travel at 12-13 knots (about 14 Miles Per Hour).

Q - Will I get sea sick?
The Manta Raya is a catamaran which is one of the most stable designs for a water craft. The Gulf of Nicoya is known for it's calm waters. It is highly unlikely to feel sea sick. However, if you are very sensitive to motion, you may want to take some Dramamine or something else that works for you.

Q - How long does my tour last?
It depends from where you depart - from San José about 11 hours, from Jacó about 9 hours and Manuel Antonio about 11 hours.

Q - How long does it take to get to Tortuga Island?
About 1 1/2 hours from our private dock in Puntarenas.

Q - How many others will be on the tour with me?
Our Catamaran Manta Raya is licensed for 100 passengers but we limit the group size to 85 maximum.

Q - Will I have time to shop?
There is not much opportunity to shop as you will board our Catamaran Manta Raya right after breakfast. There is a souvenir shop on Tortuga Island.

Q - Is there anywhere for me to take a shower?
Tortuga Island is not developed and there is no fresh water source for showers.  For your convenience, on the stern deck of Manta Raya there are two fresh water hose/showers.

Q - Is there a place for me to change clothes?
Yes. There are 2 changing rooms on Manta Raya and Calypso Cruises has two private bathrooms on Tortuga Island.

Q - I have small children. Can they go on the Snorkeling Tour or Banana Boat Ride?
Children are welcome if they are over 8 years old and accompanied by an adult (all Snorkelers and Banana Boat Riders must be able to swim)

Q - Do you stop at any other islands?
On the way back, we pass by more than 7 islands including the famous prison island- San Lucas (Costa Rica’s Alcatraz) but we do not stop anywhere but Tortuga Island.
